Hobby store tackles two markets

Cedar Falls, IA – The combination of products at Hobbies United is enough to tempt any passer-by.

“A place that’s selling cutlery, live bait and lingerie, I gotta stop in and see what they got,” said Rich Boesen of Cedar Falls, a retired Waterloo police officer who recently saw a television commercial for the store.

“Not that I’m all interested in lingerie,” he quickly added.

“But we got your size!” Shirley Bierner joked from the front counter.

The family-run business has been getting a lot of static for meshing feminine with fishing and trap supplies, along with walleye, crappie and bass minnows, wax worms, spikes and night crawlers.

“Had a guy come in this morning: ‘This is where I can buy my bait and my panties, right?'” Bierner said, laughing.

“Yeah, yeah,” grinned Melissa Naber, Bierner’s daughter, who stocked the intimate garments.
