G,G’s Designs, Alterations and Boutique Opens on Main Street

Farmington, NM – Maria Escajeda learned to sew at the age of 12.

She walked by La Popular, an evening woman’s wear store, in El Paso, Texas. She saw a dress in the window and tried to convince her aunt, who made her own clothing, to buy the dress for her.

“‘You want the dress?’ she asked me,” Escajeda recalled. “‘Well, make it yourself.'”

Escajeda returned to her aunt’s house, found a pattern and fabric, and made her own dress. And she’s been making her clothes ever since.
