Shop in Victoria’s Oaklands Neighbourhood a Throwback to Old-Time Merchants
Victoria, BC – Stepping through the door of The Local General Store on Haultain Road, one is greeted with a pleasantly fragrant aroma.
Almost sensing the visitor’s curiosity about the source of the fragrance, shop co-owner Alix Harvey leads him to a corner of the shop where a vintage full-sized Beach stove is mostly covered by a collection of organic body care products.
“I found the stove on UsedVictoria,” Harvey says of one of her shop’s more unique displays.
Shop Local Kick-off Set for Tuesday
Chilton County, AL – Every person that spends money at a business in Chilton County over the next six months will be reinforcing a new “Shop Local” initiative designed to encourage residents to buy locally.
The Shop Local initiative will officially launch Tuesday, July 9 at 11 a.m. at the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce and will run through Dec. 31.
But Chamber Executive Director Mike Robertson and members of the initiative’s advisory team don’t want the countywide campaign for increased local commerce to end in December.
Hospital Gift Shop Finally Grows
Saanichton, BC – A project to upgrade the hospital’s gift shop that has been talked about by the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary (SPHA) for close to 30 years has finally been realized.
A grand opening was held last Wednesday (June 26) for the new, almost doubled in size gift shop which had been under construction since winter.
“By the end of February we were looking good on timing and everything was coming together but we were lacking in our funds to continue the project,” explained Linda Padget, who is the gift shop convenor who spearheaded the project.
Collector’s Toy Shop Opens on 2nd Street
Portsmouth, OH – A new toy and game shop called Awesome Town opened at 530 Street Street this week, carrying vintage toys that promise not to break the bank. Shop owner, Heather Book, started her business in a booth at the Southbound Flea Market in Lucasville, but recently took the next step in boosting her business and turning it into what she truly envisions.
“I started Awesome Town because there is no real outlet around here, other than eBay, that covers the things I’d like to buy at the prices I’d like to buy them,” Book said.
Greeting Card Association Announces Winner of 2nd Annual Consumer’s Choice Facebook Contest
The Greeting Card Association (GCA) is pleased to announce that Madison Park Greetings’ “Bliss” card, by artist Katie Daisy, has won this year’s Consumer’s Choice LOUIE Award. Association Holds ‘Buy Local’ Campaign
Lynchburg, VA – For the second year in a row, the Lynchburg Retail Merchants Association is holding a Buy Local campaign during the month of July.
Throughout the month, customers who shop at locally owned businesses can send their receipts to the association to qualify for a prize drawing at the RMA Local Business Expo and Celebration Aug. 8 at River Ridge mall.

Urban Expositions Acquires Sofa Chicago from the Art Fair Company
Atlanta, GA — Atlanta-based show management company Urban Expositions has acquired the international Sculpture Objects Functional Art + Design Fair (SOFA) from The Art Fair Company. Celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, SOFA is the largest and longest continually running art fair in Chicago.
Urban Expositions plans to build a division specializing in art fairs and SOFA is their first such acquisition. The Art Fair Company will continue to run the fair during a transition period and Urban Expositions will take over at the completion of the upcoming 2013 event.

The winners of the 41st sofi™ Awards for the outstanding specialty foods and beverages of the year were announced this evening at the Summer Fancy Food Show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York.
The awards, from the Specialty Food Association, were presented at a red-carpet ceremony hosted by internationally-acclaimed chef Marcus Samuelsson. A sofi is the highest honor in the $86 billion specialty food industry.
