The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index Increases to Five-Year High
The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index®, which had improved in April, increased again in May. The Index now stands at 76.2 (1985=100), up from 69.0 in April. The Present Situation Index increased to 66.7 from 61.0. The Expectations Index improved to 82.4 from 74.3 last month.
The monthly Consumer Confidence Survey®, based on a probability-design random sample, is conducted for The Conference Board by Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and analytics around what consumers buy and watch.

Handmade Crafts to Be on Display

This is the first open house for local artisans to be held at the business, according to owner Marlene Rogala.
Rogala and her husband, Steve, and their daughter, Lauren, operate the Freehold location, which has been on West Main Street for 36 years.

Perrysburg Boutique Celebrates Fifth Anniversary
Perrysburg, OH – At Puttin’ On The Glitz, the front shelves are lined with vinegars and oils. Dozens of varieties of loose teas line a wall. A large, footed bathtub, filled with fizzy bath-bombs, rests next to an irreverent greeting card display.
The self-described “unique boutique,” which opened June 1, 2008, in Perrysburg, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a weeklong celebration taking place from May 30 to June 6.
“We are going to have smaller sales going on each day,” said store owner Kelly Heuss, who runs the business with her mother Joanne Heuss.

Retailers Debut Shop-Local Campaign
NY – The state’s leading retail association, founded in 1931 and representing more than 5,000 members from solo shops to national chains, has made the leap to Internet promotion to build business-friendly communities.
“I Shop NY” is a statewide campaign from the Retail Council of New York State that primarily uses new media and public relations “to build communities of support among local business owners and consumers.” It debuted May 22; the website is Ishopny.com.

Ridgefield, CT – Sushi plates from Scotland, asparagus-shaped candles from Paris and necklaces from Kenya — these are only some of the wares the Purple Frog gift shop at 5 Bailey Avenue offers to its customers.
Store owner Emma Hardiman said she always wanted her store to be bright and modern with gifts for everybody. And it has taken on a more international identity since its official opening on April 27.
“The idea is you can buy anything for anybody of any age,” she said.
