Skokie, IL – No matter how successful the project to revitalize downtown Skokie into a bustling commercial district, there will always be a slice of peace and tranquility available.
The women who visit this space can leisurely shop for boutique items or enjoy spa services in a serene setting. This small storefront business is meant to become their own little nirvana.
For just this reason, Sangita Shrestha opened downtown Skokie’s Nirvana Boutique & Spa at 4843 Oakton St.

Brandon’s Garden Scents has New Owner
Fond du Lac, WI – As Sharon Krohn and her sister Charlene Strook bid farewell as owners of Garden Scents Everlasting — a home and garden shop they’ve operated for 17 years in Brandon — Monica Flier, Waupun, takes the reins as the new owner.
A longtime customer, Flier said her passion for the shop’s quaint atmosphere, huge array of products and friendly personalized service are what kept her coming back to the store.
“I was fascinated by their inventory — the vast selection of items they carried,” Flier said.
Artist Revamps Jewelry for Sale at Heritage Museum
Hendersonville, NC – What’s old is new again at the Heritage Museum, where vintage jewelry is finding new sparkle in up-to-date settings in a new collection of wearable pieces available in the museum gift shop.
Costume jewels such as brooches and shoe clips are being resurrected as pendants, bracelets and earrings, thanks to the skilled eye and hands of Abbie Doyle.
“Retro stuff is trendy again,” says Doyle, owner of My Garden of Beadin’, a bead and jewelry store on Church Street. “Why leave jewelry in a drawer when it can be worn and enjoyed again?”
Owner’s Thorny Path Led to Celtic Shop
Dunedin, FL – In 1996, Lynn Thorn left her job with Norfolk Southern Railroad and moved across the pond to Borehamwood, England, to marry the man she loved.
Just 18 months later she was a widow.

Celtic Moose Doubles up in South Superior
South Superior, WI – Moose sightings will soon double in South Superior. Celtic Moose Gift Shoppe opened Thursday at its new location, 5819 Tower Ave. The original storefront one block away is slated to become a fabric consignment store, Celtic Moose Textiles, by the end of the month.
Owner Kim Nygaard opened the gift shop at 5907 Tower Ave., in May.
“I outgrew it as soon as I moved in,” she said.
Nygaard was prompted to move to the larger store, which has three times the space of the old shop, to add more artists’ work.
Church Store is Parishioner Gathering Place
Charlotte, NC – Step under the green awning in a hallway at Christ Episcopal Church on Providence Road and you’ve entered GOODNEWS the shop@Christ Church, a gift shop where all profits are used to do good for others via grants to an array of charitable organizations – many focused on women and children.
The shop partners with the Episcopal Church Women’s Bazaar, a December church event for local vendors to sell baked goods and other wares.
In 2011, GOODNEWS and the ECW Bazaar together donated more than $72,000 to charity; this year’s goal is $80,000.
Two Palatine Businesswomen Combine Forces with New Retail Space
Palatine, IL – Seven years ago, Palatine resident Nancy Gust decided to open a fashion boutique in downtown Palatine called Fancy Nancy’s. She happened to be leasing the space next to Patti Curtis, a fellow Palatine resident and owner of Patti’s Pretties, a longstanding gift and flower shop.
“We instantly became friends,” said Curtis. “It is kind of like a mother-daughter relationship, but we are great friends.”
After a few years in business, Gust decided to close her shop, but she kept in touch with Curtis.
