NoHo Boutique Owners Expand Clothing Empire with Fourth Shop

NoHo, NY – It’s just a year since clothing and lingerie designer Julie Erinc and her husband opened their first boutique on Lafayette Street at Bond Street, but they’re already building a clothing empire soon to be seven stores strong.

Erinc and her husband Metin — who have launched the shops BrowNY International, Designers’ Collective and pop-up Hip Hop USA on the same Lafayette Street block in the last year — recently added a fourth store to their growing NoHo empire: the women’s clothing and jewelry boutique 51.

IFDA Celebrates 65 Years of Industry Leadership at Circle of Excellence Awards Program

The International Furnishings and Design Association – formerly known as the National Home Fashions League – will celebrate its 65th anniversary on Tuesday, May 8th when the group presents its 2012 Circle of Excellence Awards. The event, established in 1992 to recognize outstanding leadership, vision and dedication in the design and furnishings industries, will take place at the Union League Club, 38 E. 37th Street, New York City at 6 p.m. with cocktails followed by the awards program at 7 p.m.

Cash Mobs Come to the Rescue of Small Businesses

Kingston, WA – Stacy Patrick hasn’t heard her cash register ring like this in months.

A group of about 20 customers calling themselves the Kitsap County Cash Mob came all at once Saturday to Patrick’s Clever Gift Shop in downtown Kingston, snatching up greeting cards, candles, mugs and various other items that haven’t gotten much of a look since last summer.

“Fall and winter have been bad in downtown Kingston. It’s been brutal,” Patrick said as happy shoppers — some with purple “Kitsap County Cash Mob” T-shirts and handmade signs — left her shop with full bags.

Expectant Couple Opens Baby Clothing Boutique in N.L.

North Liberty, IA – For North Liberty residents Nic and Kelly Mercer, opening a baby clothing boutique in their town just seemed like common sense.

“There just really seems to be kids everywhere in North Liberty,” Nic Mercer said. The median age of the city is 29, according to 2010 Census data.

Fountain Valley, CA – At 11:23 a.m. Saturday, Bonnie Tucker was on her cell phone. Tucker, a life-long Fountain Valley resident, was getting ready to mob the T-Shirt Wholesale Outlet on Talbert Avenue with 43 of her neighbors, and she was getting last-minute buying instructions from her daughter.

Online sales-tax collection likely, ending a retail edge

Columbia, S.C. — When word emerged that Amazon.com Inc. was hunting for warehouse sites, leaders in South Carolina rolled out a welcome mat of tax breaks to lure the Internet retailer.

Women open outdoor-furniture store in Scituate

Scituate — In the span of two years, Brittany Jones went from gift-shop employee to furniture store co-owner. Jones, with a little help from her actor father, teamed up with former boss Sylvia Killion to open the Paradise at Sylvia’s outdoor furniture store on Front Street in Scituate last week.

The women had discussed a possible venture ever since Jones, 35, took a job at Sylvia’s by the Sea, one of three stores Killion, 48, now owns on Front Street.

Retailers claim state may lose money on gift cards

Retailer organizations Wednesday released the results of an analysis of the sales tax impact of a new law that allows New Jersey to collect any unused funds left on a gift card and it showed that the state might lose more in tax revenue than it will collect as disgruntled card companies withdraw from the market.

American Express, InComm and Blackhawk Network last week said that they will no longer sell gift cards in the state because of the amendment to the unclaimed property law.
