Local resident realizes goal with new gift shop

Indiana — Greencastle resident Debby Pierce always wanted to own her own shop and now she has done just that. Pierce opened Crafters 2 Gifts Nov. 18 in the log cabin where Hoffman’s Gifts once stood.

After working at Tractor Supply (TSC) for over 20 years, Pierce retired last year.

It’s official: US is in recession

Washington—The U.S. economy has been in a recession since December 2007, the National Bureau of Economic Research said Monday.

The NBER — a private, nonprofit research organization — said its group of academic economists who determine business cycles met and decided that the U.S. recession began last December.

By one benchmark, a recession occurs whenever the gross domestic product, the total output of goods and services, declines for two consecutive quarters.

Black Friday sales gain seen as a one-time gift

Bargain-hungry consumers gave the nation’s retailers a much-needed early holiday boost with surprisingly healthy sales on Black Friday that tapered off Saturday and Sunday.

“It was a retail manager’s dream,” said Marissa Marks, store manager at the Beverly Center’s L’Occitane boutique, which saw Black Friday sales double to $4,000 from last year.

ComScore: Black Friday e-commerce hits $534 million

It wasn’t a blockbuster, but Black Friday wasn’t a bust, either.

ComScore on Sunday reported that online, nontravel retail sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving, traditionally a big day for consumer spending, reached $534 million.

That’s up from the same day a year ago, but just barely — e-tail sales rose just 1 percent, from $531 million.

On Saturday, comparison-shopping site PriceGrabber.com said that Web shopping traffic on Black Friday was up 11 percent.

NRF Survey Finds Black Friday Gets Holiday Season Off to Energetic Start

(Washington) – Though the holiday season is far from over, retailers across the country are breathing a collective sigh of relief after shoppers headed to stores and websites in droves over the weekend. According to the National Retail Federation’s 2008 Black Friday Weekend survey, conducted by BIGresearch, more than 172 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Black Friday weekend, up from 147 million shoppers last year*.

Shoppers spent an average of $372.57 this weekend*, up 7.2 percent over last year’s $347.55.

Shop.org Survey Finds 85 Million Americans to Shop Cyber Monday

(Washington) —Though traffic in stores was brisk over Black Friday weekend, millions of Americans saved some of their shopping for Cyber Monday, the ceremonial kickoff to the online holiday shopping season.

According to a Shop.org survey, conducted this weekend by BIGresearch, 84.6 million consumers plan to shop online from home or at work tomorrow, up from 72.0 million in 2007 and 60.7 million in 2006.

E-marketing sounds so passé, but this year, retailers are checking their e-mail lists twice to try to juice up holiday sales.

Sure, Web videos are cool, but direct marketing can be loaded with incentives that actually get people into stores or onto websites to buy something. In today’s rocky retail climate, that’s more important than ever. The National Retail Federation projects that sales will be up just 2.2%, the lowest growth since 2003, and industry estimates see store traffic actually declining by as much as 9%.
