‘Save the ta-tas’ gear sells fast at hospital gift shop

Weston, WI — The gift shop at Saint Clare’s Hospital is putting some fun in the fight against breast cancer.

The store has started selling T-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, bumper stickers and other items bearing the words “save the ta-tas,” a slang word for breasts. Five percent of sales go to The Save the Ta-tas Foundation for breast cancer research, according to the foundation’s Web site. So far, the foundation has raised about $200,000.

“We can’t keep them in stock,” said Lori LaPorte, manager of Gifts from Saint Clare.

‘Christmas Shoppe’ opens in downtown Leeds

Leeds, AL — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – at least in downtown Leeds. The Monkey’s Uncle has opened its Christmas Shoppe, a first for Leeds, across from Covenant Bank. Co-owner Tim Jennings said the shop has been great in many ways. “Well, first Leeds didn’t have [a Christmas shop] and second, we always do so much Christmas stuff every year at The Monkey’s Uncle, that we needed another location for all of it,” he said.

Aeromax donates 2,700 pirate costumes

(Lake Barrington, IL)- Award-winning Aeromax, makers of the Get Real Gear line of children’s and adults’ costumes, has just donated 2,735 pirate costumes to Kids In Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.), just in time for Halloween.

The costumes, which retail for $49.95, were made with a slight imperfection. President Mark Levine decided that they did not meet Get Real Gear’s high quality standards and deemed them unfit for retail sale.

“Instead of trying to recoup the cost of making these costumes, we saw it as an opportunity to help children across the country,” said Levine.

The retail before Christmas

Newport News, VA — On a sunny, 80-degree day last week — more than 15 days before Halloween — Wal-Mart employees in Newport News worked to put the finishing touches on their “Christmas Shop.”

And even though holiday music wasn’t playing yet, the smell of cinnamon hovered over customers as they walked past bright orange Jack-O-Lanterns to get to the Christmas trees.

It’s all an attempt by Wal-Mart, and other retailers, to jump-start the gift-giving season and combat steadily falling retail sales.

And there may be something to this early-bird theory.
