The cash register at the Candy Bouquet and Gift Store rings steadily as customers stroll into the downtown Plano storefront.
Owner Barb Cole said this has been the best summer for business since she opened her store on 15th Street eight years ago.
She credits a change in lifestyle fueled by a tighter economy and soaring gas prices. More people are working and shopping closer to home and using mass transit.
“Summers are usually slow, but we’ve seen a lot more people taking an interest recently,” she said.
A gift for confectionery
What began as a casual conversation a few months ago between Sonia Rose store owner Sonia Holbrook and one of her wholesalers crystallized last month into a new confectionery shop in downtown Lancaster.
Mary Ellen Kauffman, owner of Bonbonnière, is now a neighboring shopkeeper at 50 N. Queen St., as well as a supplier of the fabric flowers Holbrook incorporates into the purses she makes and sells.
Sonia Rose once occupied the space across the hall where Bonbonnière just opened, but moved last September to the larger space formerly occupied by Bella Boo.
Souvenir store a focus of Cats’ marketing
New Britain – Evan Levy calls it “shopper-tainment.”
Since Levy’s father Coleman and Bill Dowling purchased the New Britain Rock Cats in 2000, the team’s souvenir store has been a focal point of their marketing scheme, but the team’s vice president and his well-trained staff have taken ballpark fun a step further.
And as their slogan says, you’ve got to stop at the Third Base Shop before heading home.
“With the expansion of the store for those who haven’t seen it, it allows for more product and people spend more time browsing,” Evan Levy said.

Finally ‘Out of the Woods’
When Barbara Connell and her mother, Judy Lee, cast their eyes on the little house next to the Mooresville-Decatur Times, they decided it was worth saving. “We loved the character of it,” Connell said.
The foundation and the roof needed remodeling, the inside needed painting and new woodwork and the outside was crying out for vinyl siding.
Connell had owned “Out of the Woods,” an antiques and collectibles shop in Morgantown, for almost four years. But her history is in Mooresville. She is a 1984 graduate of Mooresville High School and grew up in the area.

That was before airfares and fees kept marching upward and gasoline prices climbed to $4 a gallon.
In the end, they settled on a far more modest option: a day in nearby Estes Park for the annual Scottish Festival.
“It feels like a good summer to have a . . .
