Giftcraft Celebrates World Headquarters Grand Opening

Brampton, Ontario – Hundreds of retailers and members of the gift and home decor industry celebrated the Grand Opening of Giftcraft’s new corporate headquarters on Jan. 26. The gala event, held prior to CGTA Show week, featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially dedicate the new complex and commemorate Giftcraft’s investment in its future as a leader in the gift industry.

The highlight of the new headquarters building is the company’s newly designed 17,000 square-foot showroom, the final stage in Giftcraft’s expansion and relocation.

Friends Becky Morales and Karen Amato had benefits, good wages and decades of experience at their jobs when they were laid off when their respective companies went under.

The women, who had met years before when their children were in sports together, decided that they were ready to try something new with their careers.

“At this age, it’s not that easy to go out and get a job,” Amato said.

Stores post disappointing January sales

New York – Here’s a sign of how shaky the economy has become: Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) says its shoppers are redeeming their holiday gift cards for basic items — pasta sauce, diapers, laundry detergent — instead of iPods or DVDs.

Merchants had hoped shoppers armed with gift cards would provide a lift after a dismal holiday shopping season — partly because shoppers tend to spend even more than the value of the card.

New York – In the latest example that the U.S. dollar just ain’t what it used to be, some shops in New York City have begun accepting euros and other foreign currency as payment for merchandise.

Hawley Street is home to a new arts, crafts and antique shop

Kathy Patzer’s passion for color and art drove her to open a new gift and antique shop in Mundelein.

Patzer opened Hawley Street Shoppe at 39 E. Hawley St. on Dec. 1. It takes the place of A Rare Find, a custom furniture business that moved to Libertyville.

The new Mundelein business features antiques, glass, yarn, fine art and more. Knitting classes will be kicking off soon.

Patzer’s son, Charlie, makes the hand-blown glass sold at the shop.

Ontario — The gift shop at the Four Rivers Cultural Center is a place to find information about different cultures and diversity, but it’s also a place to find that special gift or to order those unique items needed in large events or celebrations, such as 100 pairs of chopsticks for a wedding. Shop til you drop?

Women prefer to shop alone.

While this will be good news to men, it was recently discovered that 89 percent of women say they are more pleasant shopping alone or with their children than with their partner, according to a recent study conducted by designer outlet chain McArthurGlen.

Fifty percent of those women admitted it drove them crazy when their boyfriend, fiance or husband looked bored or complained about shopping.

On the other hand, 35 percent of the men said that they were frustrated with their girlfriend, fiance or wife when she insists on visiting every store.

Jewish shop a rare find in Valley

Bethlehem | A Chile-born family who embraced their Jewish heritage just seven years ago has opened one of the Lehigh Valley’s most distinctive businesses.

To find anything akin to Yahrushalaim Israeli Gift Shop & Judaica at 514 W. Broad St. in the city means driving to New York or Philadelphia, according to Levi Arevalo, the 18-year-old son of shop owner Luz Maria Sepulveda.

The family moved to Bethlehem in 1998 and a few years later learned their ancestors had fled Spain, where the Inquisition banned Jews during the 15th century.

At a small high-end children’s clothing and toy store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, shirts for infants go for as much as $40 and sweaters for toddlers to first graders cost $40 to $70.
