Cherokee Business: Canton baker has a lot at stake in cakes
Jill Brown started her baking business in the basement kitchen of her Canton home.
“I’d bake cakes for my children’s birthday parties,” said Brown. “When my kids’ friends saw the cakes, they’d want one for their birthday. I used to just do them for a hobby.”
Word spread about Brown’s marvelous concoctions and the hobby expanded.
“I got bored, and I wanted more artistic expression, so I started doing wedding cakes,” she said.
And that’s when the business really took off.

Debbie Lunsford and her husband, Bill, own Nature’s Gift, a specialty store that sells such items as herbal teas and oils for aroma therapy.
Debbie Lunsford drew from her experiences in Portland, Ore., when she opened Nature’s Gift, a small shop on the corner of Yadkinville and Transou roads.
Lunsford, and her husband, Bill, own the store, which moved to this location about two years.

Buffalo Games Inc. Partners with Child Life Council; Award winning games to be donated for therapeutic play
Buffalo, NY (March 7, 2007) – Buffalo Games, the makers of multiple award-winning party games and jigsaw puzzles have partnered with the Child Life Council in an effort to make life more fun and rewarding for children undergoing challenging life events. Buffalo Games will provide roughly 1,500 free games to approximately 470 hospitals nationwide offering child life programs.
Games include award winning titles Imaginiff and Last Word. According to the Child Life Council, play is an essential, natural part of childhood.
Liberty Hospital gift shop refurbished, expanded;Employees, visitors keep volunteer clerks busy
If you arrive at the hospital empty handed to visit your favorite aunt, don’t worry. Liberty Hospital Auxiliary’s gift shop provides the opportunity to pick up a little present on site.
“Actually, the gift shop is a good place to shop for everyone,” said Larry Rice, volunteer manager who runs the store with volunteer clerks.
He said the shop recently had been renovated, expanded its space and added more items for shoppers.
“It was just too crowded and small for the amount of business we were doing,” he said.

Uniqueness helps Floto’s flourish
Floto’s Gift Shop, 123 Washington Ave., with its distinctive green porcelain panels, has done well with the tourist and local trade for years.
“We had a good year in 2006 and expect the same in 2007,” said Manager Mary Bolt Ellingboe.
While winter business is normally slow, it is slightly up from last winter, Bolt Ellingboe said.
Western Michigan customers return regularly and especially like the store’s nautical items, including displayed Coast Guard vessels.

It was at the San Francisco International Gift Fair that the Pet Rock was discovered in the mid-1970s, and later the Cabbage Patch Kid.
Now 54 years old, the fair — which opened Saturday and ends Wednesday — is an institution for the kinds of unique stuff nobody needs but retailers hope lots of people want: pricey brooms with braided handles, decorative balls covered in seashells, handmade dog treats, silver piggy banks and hemp wallets.

Jill and Warren Schimpff know what to expect.
They will be greeted tomorrow by 30 or 40 e-mailed orders, maybe twice that many far-flung questions and requests. It happens each time The History Channel features Schimpff’s Confectionery, as it will again at 10 tonight.
“It ran the Thursday night before Christmas,” Warren Schimpff said. “We had one day to ship it.”
