Stone Harbor, NJ – John Settelen and his wife, Kathy, had no experience in retail before opening the gift and clothing stores Onni in Ocean City and Stone Harbor.
Settelen had spent a career as a certified public accountant working with investment companies in the energy industry. His wife was a stay-at-home mom.
“I left the corporate world. I was a CPA and knew I could handle the business side. She is a people-person. We just had to understand the business,” he said.

ShoppingTown Gift Shop Adds More Vendors in Larger Space
Dewitt, NY – The We Are Made in CNY gift store at ShoppingTown Mall keeps getting bigger.
Susann Panek opened the shop in a small space next to GNC in November. At the time, she was looking for a more permanent spot to sell her Pint Sized Pies for the holidays.
She previously sold the pies-in-a-jar at the CNY Regional Market. When she locked up the store at ShoppingTown, she decided to invite some of her friends from the market along for the ride.

He should know.
Chocolate runs in his blood: He’s a fourth-generation chocolatier (the great-grandson of Ervin and Julia Morley of Morley Candy Makers) and he spent a decade working for Morley. Even though he’s a full-time elementary school teacher, Petz was unable to resist the pull of chocolate and in 2010 started Detroit Chocolat in Sterling Heights (to the delight of his mother and his wife whom he calls a “chocolate addict.”)
Elmhurst Boutique Offers More Than Fashion
Elmhurst, IL – When Leslie Pozen and Angie Pool met at a St. Patrick’s Day party, they instantly knew they’d be friends. But two years after the chance meeting, they’re also business partners.
“We connected immediately,” Pool said.
Now the two operate Rouse, a specialty boutique and studio in downtown Elmhurst that opened late last year. Pool was ready to retire from the corporate world, where she’d worked for almost 30 years, when Pozen’s growing ellu handbag business demanded more than a basement workshop.

Gloucester, MA – “There are no olive trees in Gloucester,” my husband said.
I had told him a friend and I were checking out the Newburyport Olive Oil Co., which opened in November as the “sister” store to the Cape Ann Olive Oil Co. in Gloucester, which opened January 2012.
He’s right about the trees. But you could argue that lifelong Gloucester residents Lauren and Eric Negron have imported something better: extra virgin olive oils from around the world.
After Sandy, Ink Runs Again
Fairhaven, NJ – After Hurricane Sandy barreled though the East Coast and demolished the former Sea Bright location of Ink, a stylish paper and gift boutique, store owner Shayne Wolfe took matters into her own hands.
On May 29, she re-opened shop at 803 River Road in Fair Haven.
Ink provides customers with more than just customized cocktail napkins and guest towels; Wolfe goes above and beyond for her clientele, making every trip to Ink personal.
