New Gift Shop Opens in Blue Hill

Blue Hill, ME – Two Blue Hill women have opened a gift shop called Three Wishes in the Stavola House, which overlooks the harbor.

Three Wishes carries home goods, jewelry and accessories.

“We have a little bit of everything,” said Samantha Politte, who opened the shop with her good friend, Kim Williamson. “We’re just trying to fill that void of fun, fresh gift items. It’s just filled with stuff we love.”

Iowa City, IA – An Iowa City graphic designer is looking to give her business — and old furniture — a second chance on the market.

Leigh Bradford opened A. Marvel Home Decor, 511 Iowa Ave., on April 27. The store is the third incarnation of Meta Home, a home decor shop initially housed at 119 E. Washington St. between 2001 and 2010, then at 115 Fifth St.

New Chocolate and Candy Shop Opens in Beverly

Beverly, IL – Freshly made chocolate creations fill the shelves of a new sweet shop where a Beverly couple hopes to build a thriving business.

Katie and Pat Murphy opened Sweet Freaks, 9915 S. Walden Parkway, last week and a steady flow of customers and candy gazers have been filtering into the shop in the days since.

“We opened really fast and everything has just fallen into our laps,” said Katie Murphy.

It only took about 30 days to open the shop which grew from a successful catering and candy-making business.

IBISWorld Forecasts Mother’s Day Sales to Grow 0.2 Percent in 2013

As spare time declines and more Americans return to work, items that are easy to purchase, such as flowers and gift certificates, will be popular Mother’s Day gifts this year, according to industry research firm IBISWorld. Consumers, who have slowly returned to splurging on gifts for holidays such as Mother’s Day since the 2008 recession, are projected to spend 0.2 percent more on Mother’s Day purchases in 2013 than they did in 2012, to total $17.1 billion.

Last year, spending on mom improved 6.5 percent as per capita disposable income experienced strong growth.

Consumer Spending Trends: Mother’s Day Tops Pops

Consumer spending trends favor Mom this year, with Mother’s Day spending forecast to jump 11 percent, according to the National Retail Federation. Consumers will spend an average of $168.94 on mom, while total Mother’s Day spending is expected to reach $20.7 billion.

Holiday spending had been flat that this year, according to consumer spending trends tracked by the NRF. Both Valentine’s Day and Easter spending were projected to be basically unchanged from 2012.

New Baby Specialty Boutique Opens In Hilo

Hilo, HI – After having a hard time finding a gift for a baby’s first luau last year, Hilo native Sesha Lovelace-Ragon turned her frustration into opportunity.

The Waiakea grad and her husband had just moved back to east Hawaii after spending 12 years in San Francisco where Lovelace-Ragon managed clothing shops.

She noticed that Hilo had few stores geared towards babies and although there were several consignment shops in east Hawaii, few catered specifically to kids.
