Colorful Nook For Artists

Payson, AZ – It only takes quick look inside the newly opened Nook to hook the senses. Colorful paintings, ceramics, textiles and jewelry from 30 Rim Country and Arizona artists fill the tiny space off the Beeline Highway in the Swiss Village Shops.

The Art Nook is the creation of co-owners Glenda Roark, 78, and Solveig “Sally” Myers, 80, two local artists and friends who wanted a place to display the talent of local artists.

On March 15-16, the Art Nook will hold a grand opening celebration at 802 N. Beeline Highway.

New Del Mar Decor Shop Unique in its Fair Trade-Only Values

Del Mar, CA – There’s a new home decor shop in downtown Del Mar, and every item in it tells a story — from the handwoven baskets that still smell like the campfire their African artisans gathered around to the artistic metal wall hangings crafted in Haiti from recycled oil drums.

But those stories would remain unknown if it weren’t for fair trade enthusiasts such as Betsy and Jude Paganelli of Carmel Valley, who opened the shop Fair Trade Decor on March 3 at 1412 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, 92014.

Business Hits Sweet Spot with Customers

Beloit, IL – Beloit’s downtown will be a little sweeter thanks to Scott and Teala Lamoreux. The couple opened a candy, chocolate and popcorn shop in Beloit’s downtown at 314 State St. on Valentine’s Day.

Celebrating five years in business, Northwoods Premium produces hand-made candies including toffee, fudge and brittle, fine chocolates such as turtles and meltaways and a variety of gourmet popcorn including kettle corn, caramel, cheddar and specialty flavors.

Blanche’s Gifts Opens in Chickasaw

Chickasaw, AL – Teresa Goolsby and her daughter, Shannon Griffin, have opened Blanche’s Gifts, a one-stop gift shop, on West Lee Street.

The small, bright yellow 1950s-era shop offers customers an opportunity to purchase everything from baby items to doggie treats. A few antiques and collectibles are also available.

Goolsby named the shop for her mother, Blanche Robinson, who is legally blind, but has always loved to sew and make crafts.

Retired Teachers Opening Downtown Gift Shop

Middletown, OH – For years, David and Melody Gall’s friends told them to take their passion to the next level — to open a business.

But life got in the way, so the Galls sold their craft items at Barn-n-Bunk in Trenton and at weekend shows.

Then last year, the Lakota School District eliminated its industrial arts program. Because David Gall taught woodworking and small engines, he was out of a job one year short of full retirement.

Stirring up Sweet Success

Savannah, GA – It began simply enough in 1973 when Georgia Nash and her daughter, Pamela Strickland, decided to open a small gift shop in downtown Savannah.

Boldly choosing a River Street location at a time when the cobblestoned waterfront was still mostly vacant or consisted of abandoned warehouses, the two budding entrepreneurs christened their enterprise The Cotton Bale, opening on St. Patrick’s Day and filling it with Habersham Plantation Furniture, Georgia gift products and Christmas ornaments.

Four decades later, that little gift shop is still in the family.
