Woman’s snacks gain popularity

Covington – Marilyn Baker’s life changed for good in 2004.

That was the year her beloved Sheltie dog, a 12-year-old pooch named Yankee Doodle, died. As a speech language pathologist, Yankee Doodle would accompany Baker to the nursing homes she would visit. She became known as “The Lady with the Dog.”

In her grief after the dog’s death, Baker started to cook – a lot. It helped her cope with the sadness.

Glass beads are works of beauty, whimsy and wonder

Dozens of unique, colorful glass beads shimmer in the sun’s rays at Kimberley Adams’ new Flat Rock business, Transformation Glass.

A long pink bead with shiny sparkles and a blue design with white stars is especially eye-catching. So is a light translucent blue bead that sparkles with a glittery turquoise color in the sunlight.

Creating beautiful, unique glass beads is Adams’ passion. She literally wrote the book on the subject — “The Complete Book of Glass Beadmaking,” Lark Books/Sterling Press, 2005 — and her work is shown in galleries throughout the country.

‘Pride of New England’ West Gloucester gift shop makes its regional mark

Local business owner Pauline Bresnahan can officially be called the “Pride of New England.”

Bresnahan’s business, Pauline’s Gifts, has been designated one of the best gift shops in New England, after receiving the Boston Gift Show’s highest honor, the “Pride of New England Award.”

The most coveted of all awards given away at the show, the fourth annual “Pride of New England Award” is given in recognition of outstanding customer service, merchandising creativity, community involvement, and — of course — a strong sense of New England pride.

Todd Carr’s works to be featured at local shop

Todd Carr became interested in woodworking when he was a child.

His primary influences trace back to his grandfather, a contractor/woodworker, his own father who also worked with wood and a childhood trip to Biltmore, the Vanderbilt mansion located in Ashville, N.C., where the woodwork is particularly spectacular, he said.

“I’ve been making things out of wood ever since I can remember,” said the craftsman whose works will be featured next weekend during a showcase exhibit at Persnickety in Madison.

American Greetings sells retail business

Card company American Greetings Corp. on Friday said it has agreed to sell its retail business and buy a wholesale business unit in a deal with privately held card company and retailer Schurman Fine Papers.

American Greetings is selling its retail store operations to Schurman, which operates Papyrus card and gift retail stores. Schurman will operate stores under the American Greetings, Carlton Cards and Papyrus brands.

Mall Titan Enters Chapter 11

Mall owner General Growth Properties Inc. sought bankruptcy protection early Thursday in one of the largest real-estate failures in U.S. history, capping a precarious, months-long effort to juggle the crushing $27 billion debt load it shouldered in past acquisition sprees.

The long-anticipated Chapter 11 filing might wipe out what remains of the Chicago company’s stock, but it won’t result in mall closures. Many analysts suspect General Growth will survive a lengthy bankruptcy intact, but perhaps smaller after selling properties, without resorting to liquidation.

New gift shop opens in Henley

A new gift shop has opened in Henley.

Temptation Gifts launched last week in the former Silvers menswear shop in Bell Street, which closed in February.

The family owned business, which offers gifts ranging from teddy bears to fly swatters, was voted UK gift retailer of the year in 2008.

Refurbishment of the premises took just five weeks.

Owner Mike Adams said: “My team has been fantastic. I’m really proud of the work they have done — I think the shop looks amazing. It is almost 2,000 sq ft and we had to knock down an interior wall and do major restructuring.

Retail sales drop 1.3% in March

After two encouraging months of small increases, retail sales declined nationally in March, indicating many consumers are still not willing to shop for substantial purchases.

The U.S. Commerce Department reported Tuesday that retail sales declined 1.3 percent from February, considerably worse than the 0.3 percent economists had anticipated.

Branford entrepreneur Daniela Fenton has no qualms about the economy, despite some nearby stores closing in the Town Center.

“I haven’t even thought about the economy,” said Fenton, the owner of Blend at 1120 Main St. “I would prefer to be hopeful.”

Fenton opened Blend, a creative center, about a year ago and recently doubled the size of her business by expanding into an adjacent building when the occupant moved to another location in town. “When I opened, I had a much bigger vision than my space allowed for,” she explained.

With pens costing as much as £1,200, it would be easy to assume that business was struggling at The Pen Shop in Birmingham’s Great Western Arcade as the recession bites.

But manager David Hardy remains upbeat.
