Business may be picking up in Virginia City
Today is the Fourth of July in Virginia City, one of the biggest events of the year in the historic mining town, and business owners are counting on a good day.
Thousands of people come up the hill to watch the parade, the Comstock Cowboys and the fireworks, ride the train, visit the local shops, have some ice cream or a couple of beers. Or both.
One of several new businesses on C Street is The Comstock Creamery, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor that also offers sandwiches, pastries, espresso and beer and wine.
Norfolk card shops go head to head
Two Norfolk shop owners will be heading to London next week where they will battle it out for the title of the region’s best card retailer after being nominated for the prestigious award.
Cards ‘n’ Things in Hellesdon and Brambles on Exchange Street in Norwich have both been shortlisted for Best Independent Card Retailer in East Anglia in the Reta awards, after they were nominated by their suppliers.
Both will now go head to head at the awards being held at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Tuesday .

Some people can see an old house, the potential it has if given some tender loving care and then remodel it to become exactly the type of place they envisioned.

Dallas Market Center Announces June 2008 Best of Show Awards

Mindy Kaling of NBC’s “The Office” to Officiate “The Office Games”
New York – Mindy Kaling, writer, co-executive producer and the actress known as the chatty Kelly Kapoor on NBC’s “The Office,” will join fans in Scranton, PA, on Saturday, July 19 as Dunder Mifflin’s hometown becomes the first city to offer the new The Office DVD Board Game and The Office Trivia Game by Pressman Toy and licensed by NBC Universal Television Consumer Products Group.
Ms. Kaling will officiate “The Office Games” – a full day of Dunder Mifflin style fun – starting with a 2K Fun Run and ending with a Beet Eating Contest that would make Dwight proud.
Sadek Reports 59 Percent Increase in Wholesale Online Sales

Parker City beauty salon expands with coffee bar
Parker City has a new business in town, Reflections. Open April 1, the new establishment is located on St. Rd. 32 in the former Thompson Insurance building and consists of several enterprises rolled into one. Clever hairstylists and co-owners Melissa Buis and Carissa Morris decided to add a coffee bar to their beauty shop. Husbands Tom and Michael, respectively, are also part owners.
“The idea started small from offering coffee, tea and milk,” Buis said. “Then it expanded to The Coffee Bar at Reflections.
Mother, daughter work together at their gift shop
Gary – When Gwen Moore was 8 years old, her mother gave her a choice of activities to fill her leisure time. She had no idea that this choice would have a big impact on her adult life.
“It was either join the Girl Scouts or take ceramic classes,” said the Crown Point resident. “I tried the Brownie thing, but that just wasn’t me. So I chose ceramics.”
The hobby never left her, as she continued the craft throughout her adult life, even while raising four children.
Along with her daughter Lavita Burr, Moore owns and operates Gwen’s Expressions Gift Shop at 4444 Broadway.

Christian retail market heats up
Salisbury — At meeting of the nation’s top 100 independent religious booksellers in Nashville last month, an industry publisher announced it was scaling back the number of titles available for distribution to retail stores. The news was a second “holy cow!” for Jack Savage, who is already fighting to shield Jack’s Religious Gift Shop from what could be his stiffest competition in nearly 50 years.
