Couple Uses Repurposed Bottles to Make Business

West Chester, OH – A family-run business in West Chester Twp. is making garbage smell good.

That is Vela de Vino — translated to “wine candle” in Spanish — formed by husband-wife duo Jenny and Joe Gutman of West Chester Twp. The two run the business out of their home, creating candles inside recycled wine, beer and liquor bottles.

Joe Gutman said they got the idea for the “wine candle” after seeing a similar concept in a Chicago boutique during summer 2010. He said both the candle and glass-cutting were of low quality.

Maker of La-Dee-Dahs Candy Sets Up Shop in Loop

Chicago, IL – La-Dee-Dahs are having their day.

The chocolate-dipped swirls of salted caramel and white chocolate nougat have made it into the pages of O and Food & Wine magazines and, just this month, Bon Appetit.

And after five years of production in a shared kitchen on the West Side, the candy and its maker have a new, permanent home in the Loop.

Fine Invitations and Stationery Shop Comes to Lexington

Lexington, NC – Stationary, thank-you cards, party invitations and much more now fill the second floor of 140 W. First Ave., sharing the restored home with Beck’s Flower Shop.

A Notable Affair recently opened to offer Lexington something it doesn’t have, said Tiffany Gray, part owner of the fine stationary shop. Gray and her sister, April Lewis, partnered to create the business.

A grand-opening ceremony was held earlier this month, hosted by Uptown Lexington Inc.

Arteriors Opens First Lighting Showroom in Dallas at International Lighting Market

Arteriors, a leading home furnishings company, will open its first lighting showroom at the Dallas Market Center in Dallas, Texas on January 17, coinciding with the International Lighting Market. The Rock Shop

Lone Pine, CA – Lone Pine Rocks and Gifts is known locally simply as “The Rock Shop.” And like the geological wonders it sells and displays, the store is no stranger to transformation.

It began as an auto repair garage owned by Leo and Lorene Jones in the early ’60s. Leo sectioned off part of his auto repair garage and opened Lorene’s Rock and Gift Shop. Later on their son Bud and his wife Nell bought it from them.

After going through several owners over the years, Nancy Spence and her husband, Jim, bought the store in 1998 and made many improvements to it.

Norton’s Opens West Side Flower Shop Location in Time for Holidays

The new store, at 2558 W. Stadium, is just across the street from Westgate Shopping Center, where the former Norton’s shop resided for 21 years. The new location is smaller and more visible to passing traffic. It’s a strategic move that already has shown an increase in shoppers coming into the store, according to president, Tim Galea.

Galea said a great deal of work was needs to transform the space, which used to be home to Focus Photo.

Birmingham Shop Owner is Whistling With the Gnomes

Denise Kulak wants her customers to enjoy a “Willy Wonka experience” when they walk through the door of her new gift shop, called Fun Stuff. It’s inside the Adams Square shopping center at 725 S. Adams Road.

“I started out with a little shop in my pole barn in Frankfort,” said Kulak. “I actually opened it on a whim when I lost my job in May. I put down Astroturf, added some curtains and I bought some product — and I managed to sell everything over the summer.

Ceramics Shop Opens in Town & Country

Palo Alto native Emily Brown started Emilia Ceramics five years ago as an outgrowth of her travels. “I started the business because I love to travel and especially enjoy connecting with locals while traveling,” said Brown in a written statement to Patch.
